Virgo Energy
Virgo is the ninth sign of the zodiac. The body parts and systems associated with Virgo include the abdomen, intestines, pancreas, spleen, and sympathetic nervous system. Virgo’s energetic signatures include being service-oriented, highly observant, and extremely vigilant.
People with their Sun in Virgo often have a strong desire for perfection—sometimes to a fault. They tend to be extremely efficient in the tasks at hand and, if they are not careful, can also become highly self-critical.
Core Theme: Learn to embrace the idea that even the imperfect can be perfect. Practice being more compassionate toward yourself and learn to embrace the moments when things don’t go according to plan.
Over the years, here are some of my observations about the energetic connection between the abdomen, intestines, pancreas, spleen, and sympathetic nervous system:
- Intestines – A place of personal power, where we can tap into our reserve of inner strength.
- Intestines – May reflect a fear of letting go or a tendency to hold onto things that have already served their purpose.
- Pancreas – Finding balance between loving others and being open to receiving love.
- Pancreas – Difficulty comprehending or making sense of certain life experiences or situations.
- Spleen – Represents insight and wisdom; when out of balance, it may be associated energetically with a sense of heaviness or a darker mood.
- Spleen – Holding onto old thoughts and feelings may contribute to difficulty processing or “digesting” life experiences.
The following excerpt from my book, Infinite Body Wisdom, illustrates the energetic themes of the Virgo season:
Kurt Has Self-Doubt
The last story in this acorn section is about the pelvis, located at the base of the spine. This area correlates with our identity and sense of self. Our body gives us subtle signals via stiffness and mild discomforts, but ignoring these signals builds up the symptoms’ intensity. One such example is a gentleman named Kurt. When Kurt came in, he was complaining of low back and butt pain on the left side. He had been having this pain for a few months, so I asked, “What’s been happening in your life?”
Kurt briefly contemplated, then said, “Nothing really, except things have been challenging with my wife and family, which puts me right in the middle. It’s uncomfortable being in the middle and having to choose between the two. I wish they’d all just get along!” With a big sigh, Kurt grabbed his low back and grimaced a bit. As I questioned him some more, I learned he was also having trouble with his digestion and was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. I also discovered that work was stressful due to the sluggish economy, and his income was based on commissions.
There appeared to be a multitude of things bothering Kurt, but what shone through loud and clear was his desire for family harmony. From his comments it appeared that Kurt thought his wife knew better than he, and was more spiritual and aware. He liked to tinker with his roadster, and cruising on a winding road was his idea of happiness. However, it was a big bone of contention with his wife, who demanded that he sell it and stop pouring money into fixing it.
Kurt spoke up, “I am the only one working, and tinkering with my car helps to keep me sane. But my wife constantly bitches about my car and hounds me to get well so we can spend more time together. I know Michelle cares about me and loves me, but she’s unwilling or unable to see my point of view. Also, even though she doesn’t work, many times I come home to a messy house and dinner is rarely cooked.” Kurt’s irritation was evident, even though he immediately followed up with, “Michelle knows better than I do what is right for me!” He then fell silent.
I ventured, “I’m wondering – every time you doubt yourself, does the pain intensify?”
Kurt raised an eyebrow and said, “Come to think of it, whenever Michelle makes me feel bad about my ways and I attempt to please her, my back and butt get more painful. How in the world?”
“I know this may sound bizarre, but I have seen this happen in a number of practice members and I too have experienced pain when I doubted and overrode my own inner knowing, just to keep the peace. In a funny way, would you say that your wife is a pain in the you-know-what at times?”
Kurt chuckled and replied, “That is so weird, but yeah – it makes sense. I never thought of it quite that way, but it always bothered me when I gave in to her persistent demands. Hmmmmmm.” All of a sudden Kurt sat up straighter and expressed, “Hey, the pain in my back and butt is less intense. Can it really be that simple?”
I replied, “It’s that simple. You’ve taken the first step in becoming aware of what’s truly irritating you. Once you acknowledged what was bothering you, your body rewarded you with less pain. The next step is teaching your body further strategies to release more tension and to figure out what feels right for you in order to own your sense of self and hold your boundaries.”
How Can This Apply to You?
Have you ever experienced a pain in your body or a queasy feeling in the pit of your stomach when you were not staying true to yourself? It usually shows up as pelvic pain, but can also manifest as other pains or bodily symptoms. Take this time to discover your body’s sign when you allow someone to override your inner knowing. Once you identify this sign, see what happens the next time you don’t hold your boundaries. Pay attention and respond differently to any pressing situation, and you’re likely to notice the presence of greater ease in your body.
True magic to heal lies within your amazing body. Appropriately expressed by Walter Russell, “It is the recognition of the light inside of us that will create perfection in our lives.” In other words, the moment you are willing to see and own your true perfection is the alchemical moment of spiritual growth and evolution. We have been conditioned by society to compare ourselves to others and look upon ourselves as imperfect and less than. Just realizing that you are perfect inside and out, and accepting who you are – the good as well as the bad – will enable you to become balanced and reclaim your authenticity. No one really heals you; the truth is, you heal yourself. Other people or healers may give you the impression that they have some magical ability to take away your pain and suffering, but in reality they are giving you the opportunity to open up and embrace your true identity. It is the development of this inner knowing and trust in your infinite body wisdom that enable you to realize your life’s purpose.
